This immersive installation is a response to the sudden loss of my grandfather, who died of a heart attack. I built the experience using wood and shifting lights to create a physical and emotional space of rupture. Layered into the environment is the sound of shirts being violently torn—an audible expression of grief. Interwoven with this are voicemails my grandfather left me and others, his voice colliding with the ripping—presence and absence in one breath. This work is an attempt to hold onto him and let go at the same time.
